Fathers
Footsteps is offering Family History Researchers the
opportunity to acquire their own Domain Name and Web
site to display their family records to share with other
researchers.
The benefits
of displaying family history records using web technology
are many fold and include the ability to generate interest,
share information, receive updates or corrections from
anyone who is interested, has information or has leads
and has access to the WWW .
The service
is relatively straightforward. If Family Historians
use a computer system application such as Brothers Keeper,
Family Tree etc to maintain their records then they
have the ability to capitalise on the services offered
by Fathers Footsteps.
The services
offered attempt to minimise the impact of taking the
plunge into personalising your web presence through
acquiring a suitable Domain Name purchased in your name
and usually for a 2 year period, which is renewable.
Email using this Domain name can either be directed
at your current email address or new names can be set
up using your new Domain name i.e. yourname@yourdomain.co.uk
.
Once
the domain name is registered Web space can be acquired
to upload your web site containing your family records.
Most
genealogy applications are able to export data in a
GEDCOM format. The GEDCOM file needs to be sent to Fathers
Footsteps either on a disc, CD or via Email. Fathers
Footsteps will take this information plus any other
introductory information you want to supply, and generate
your web site.
The web
site will be created with your introductory page and
then a single page entry for each individual within
your records. Links from this page will connect with
Parents, family, pedigree and Family Names List, which
is sorted into decades. On each page, individuals viewing
your records, have the opportunity to select the Edit
key which will generate an email with their comments,
updates or corrections, directed to you for you to update
your computer application records.
As and
when you have sufficient updates, which you feel should
be uploaded to your Web site, you need to generate a
further GEDCOM file and dispatch it to Fathers Footsteps.
The current
offering does not cater for photographs; this will be
available in the Autumn.
